The Daily News, 10 August 1999:
Countdown
for Folk Week
THE countdown has begun in the
lead-up to the Murwillumbah chapter of National Folk
Week, with local performances to be spearheaded by local
Aboriginal band, Saltwater.
The inaugural National Folk Week - a community-based
celebration of folk music and performance from August 23-29
- aims to promote the work of local folk performers and
increase awareness of the folk culture nationally.
Festivities on the Tweed will culminate with an evening
concert to be held at Murwlllumbah's Youth Enterprise
Service premises in Main Street on August 28, from 6pm.
Fingal-based band, Saltwater, made up of brothers Kyle,
Joel, Joshua and Kaleb Slabb and Ron Gibson will head a
contingent of local performers including Jasmine and
Monique, Peter Hurcombe, Amanda Bell, Andrew Brittlebank,
Linda Krausz, poets and dancers. And while Saltwater's
performances are traditionally based on Aboriginal song
and dance, their inclusion in the festival will allow the
band to focus on its other musical love - folk.
"Our folk music will include a bit of traditional
Aboriginal influence, but it's far removed from the work
we do under the banner of the Coodjingburra dancers,"
lead singer, Kyle Slabb, said. "It's important we
have festivals with a local focus not only for the bands
included, but for those looking to get a break -there's
plenty of talented musicians, particularly within
Aboriginal communities where music is a very important
part of our lives."
